Reading Time: 2 Minutes

We listen to music as a means to escape reality or sometimes we just want to have some fun. But have you ever realized some songs, despite some sounding overly cheerful, are really dark and depressing? We’re here with a list of songs you’ve heard before but NEVER realized it’s actually dark.

1. OutKast - “Hey Ya!”

Despite its upbeat sound, the song is actually about a relationship that’s falling apart.

2. Fun ft. Janelle Monáe - “We Are Young”

Although the title sounds “Fun” and the music video shows slow-mo scenes of a mess happening in a club, this song has a lot of drug references in it, as well as some domestic abuse references.

3. Eminem ft. Rihanna - “Love The Way You Lie”

If you read the lyrics of this song, it’s actually about an extremely violent and dysfunctional relationship plus obvious death threats towards the end of the song.

4. Sean Kingston - “Beautiful Girls”

“They’ll have you suicidal, suicidal when you say it’s over”.

5. Foster the People - “Pumped Up Kicks”

A lot of people realized in these last few years that this song from Foster the People was actually about a school shooter, who might have been planning a shooting scene in his head. Surprising considering the song sounded laid-back and high.

6. Sia - “Chandelier”

This song tells of a girl who is experiencing depression and one of her ways of escaping the realities of her life, she’s using alcohol to forget everything.

7. James Blunt - “You’re Beautiful”

James Blunt revealed in an article that his song “Beautiful” isn’t a romantic song like what people thought it was.

8. The Weeknd - “In The Night”

Yes, it’s a catchy song but it’s actually about a girl who was abused in the past and now she strips to the song she was abused too.

9. Blondie - “One Way or Another”

If you didn’t know before One Direction covered this song, Blondie’s fun dance song actually details a stalker’s intentions and motivations to stalk his victims.

10. Hinder - “Lips of An Angel”

If you look at the lyrics closely, “Lips of An Angel” tells about a man who cheats on his girlfriend, and the rest of it was him wishing how she was his ex.

11. Rupert Holmes - “Escape” (Pina Colada song)

The reputation of Rupert Holmes’ Escape skyrocketed after people started using his song as one of the iconic meme songs, especially the line of “If you like pina colada”. But the entire song lyrics tells about a man who plans to cheat on his wife but in the turn of the event, the blind date he went for (to cheat) was none other than his wife, who is trying to cheat on him too!

12. Hozier - “Cherry Wine”

At a glance, “Cherry Wine” sounds like a sweet song but in reality, the lyrics are about domestic abuse.

13. Bastille - “Good grief”

A euphoric indie pop-rock song that describes death, funerals and overall being sad.

14. Aqua - “Barbie Girl”

Yikes, we’re sure most of us have bopped our head thinking we had a good time listening to this song. The song is all about women being used as sex objects, however men please.

15. Mike Posner - “I Took A Pill In Ibiza”

Everyone was so obsessed with it because yeah, it’s a cool song to listen to but the words are depressing.
