While we ordinary people wait to turn 18 to get our driver’s license, become legally eligible to enter clubs, procure some sort of financial independence, or just have our parents stop telling us what not to do, these singers played a whole different ball game at the same age.
Becoming famous with chart topping hits, did you know that so many singers were actually famous by the time they touched 18? Hell, some of them were famous even way before that!
We rallied up a few well-known names which were already releasing debut albums while we were merely graduating high school, and in no particular order, here they are!

#1 Billie Eilish

Believe it or not, the ‘Bury a Friend’ singer whom we’ve all come to know and love was actually born in *drum roll please* 2001! Then one night, 14 years later, she released a song, ‘Ocean Eyes’ on Soundcloud, only to find that it had become viral on the Internet the next day. The song was then re-released by Interscope Records, before she released the best performing album of 2019 in the US: ‘When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?’ Starting greatness at 14, and continuing to be one of the top singers today, Billie Eilish has certainly got all our jaws reaching the floor!

#2 Justin Bieber

Starting on YouTube, Bieber who now has one of the biggest and most devoted fanbases, was spotted by his now manager Scooter Braun in 2007, when the singer released covers of songs that he did. In 2008, Scooter decided to sign the young Canadian singer who at the time, was only 14 years old! He then released his first album in the year 2009 called ‘My World’ and he went on to become the first ever artist to have SEVEN songs from a record debut on the Billboard Hot 100. Procuring fame at a delicate age of 15, it is no surprise that this boy is packed with talent!

#3 Britney Spears

Known as the ‘Princess of Pop’ from the late 90’s and the early 2000’s, Britney debuted her first album-the one that made her famous, ‘Oops!...I Did It Again’ in 1999 when she was 18 years old. Although she began her solo music career slightly later than Eilish and Bieber, this pop star actually begun singing earlier on, when she was cast alongside big stars like Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, Ryan Gosling and Keri Russell, to voice and sing ‘The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’ in 1992. An iconic pop artist to this day, Britney Spears sure does hit us time and time again!

#4 Miley Cyrus

Born to the name Destiny Hope Cyrus and probably her musical genes, Miley Cyrus became famous when she began starring in her own TV show at 14, known as ‘Hannah Montana’, alongside her country singer dad, Billy Ray Cyrus. Singing all the songs on her show, she used her then alter ego as a means to get Miley Cyrus out into the world. Then in 2010, she grew out of the Hannah Montana shadow to take on more mature music. Spicing it up with a different style on every album, it is beyond a doubt the amount of potential and versatility Miley has always had.

#5 Justin Timberlake

Starting off with N’SYNC in the 90’s, Timberlake was the youngest (15 years old) lead vocalist of the band. In 1998, when he was 17, the band debuted their first studio album which managed to sell 11 million copies. Famous even before he reached 18, Justin then went on to pursue his solo career in 2002. Partnering with Pharrell Williams and Timberland, the young singer decided to work on new music. His debut album was released in that same year, but initially did not sell as well as N’SYNC. However, it eventually rose and went on to sell 10 million copies worldwide!

#6 Beyonce

Performing for TV and talent shows, Queen B got her big break when she, at 16, alongside two others, formed a would-be infamous girl group known as ‘Destiny’s Child’. She then went on to act on television and in the year 2003, debuted her first solo album ‘Dangerously in Love’ which won her five awards at the 46th Annual Grammy Awards. Going on to establish her alter ego Sasha Fierce, since her rise, Beyonce has given the world mind-blowing music with every album. From concerts, to documentaries, to Coachella and black activism, we’re certain she really is a queen!

#7 Rihanna

Originally from Barbados, Rihanna was discovered when she was brought to sing for rapper and music producer, Jay-Z. Singing her song ‘Pon De Replay’, her talent was immediately recognized, and she was signed by Def Jam Recordings. She was only 17 when that debut song of hers, became famous and peaked top 5 in a total of fifteen countries! Breaking through with her third studio album, ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’, she soared even higher with the album’s lead single, ‘Umbrella’. Countless addicting hits since the Barbadian singer begin her journey, it’s safe to say we’re on the edge of our seats, anticipating what she brings to the table next!

#8 Taylor Swift

Starting off with the teenage-country market, Taylor Swift became musically famous when she was only 17 years old. She debuted her first album in 2006 entitled after herself, and it manage to stay on the Billboard 200 chart for 157 weeks. Nominated for the best new artist at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards, her journey to fame from country to pop to folksy/indie, has only been taking on speed. Just releasing her eight-studio album in July this year, the singer successfully sold two million copies of that record worldwide, 1.3 million of them being on its’ FIRST DAY alone!

#9 Selena Gomez

Very much like Miley Cyrus’ journey, 28-year-old Selena Gomez also started off by attaining a lead role in a Disney show called ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’. Singing the theme song for the show and a couple of other OSTs, she established the early parts of her career in acting. Then in 2009, when the singer was 17 years of age, she formed a pop-rock band called ‘Selena Gomez & The Scene’. Onward, the starlet moved her musical journey on full throttle, putting her songs on top charts. Winning the battle against lupus in the past few years and recently starting a new cooking show, Gomez has always been a force to be reckoned with!

#10 Demi Lovato

Starring on the Disney musical, ‘Camp Rock’, Demi Lovato started her singing via the movie alongside, pop band ‘The Jonas Brothers’. Soon after that, in 2008, the singer released her debut album, ‘Don’t Forget’. At the time, she was only 16, yet managed to sell 500,000 copies of her album, which she co-wrote with ‘The Jonas Brothers’. Premiering on TV shows like ‘Sonny with a Chance’, ‘Glee’, ‘The X Factor’, and releasing numerous studio albums, the singer quickly became one to look out for. Battling depression and substance abuse in the past, Lovato have since been sober, healthy and now even engaged!

#11 Lorde

Earning her number 1 single in the US at the age of 16 in 2013, New Zealander Lorde was at the time, the youngest artist who attained that achievement. In the same year, she released her debut album ‘Pure Heroine’ which earned a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album. The album which featured her infamous lead single ‘Royals’, had Lorde on almost every radio station. Continuing to perform at concerts and live shows, the singer in 2017, released her second studio album, and went on an international concert tour. It was however halfway cancelled in June 2018, because of a political controversy.
