Independent music, or more commonly known as Indie, came about in the 1920’s and was defined as music which was produced independently from commercial record labels or their subsidiaries. In simpler terms, it basically meant using more of a do-it-yourself approach, as compared to other music.
Today, Indie music has become a very popular genre of music, and countless of artists have since released extremely addicting hits, that we often tune the world out, for.
Seeing that very fact, we figured why not come up with a list, of some of the most popularly streamed Indie hits on Spotify?

#1 Never Be Like You – Flume

By Australian band Flume, this Indie hit was released in 2016 and was named one of the top best songs of the first half of the year by the Rolling Stones magazine.
 

#2 The Less I Know the Better – Tame Impala

Another Australian band, this three-and-a-half-minute psychedelic indie hit which was released in 2015, was their fourth single on their third studio album as a band.
 

#3 Sail – Awolnation

A much older song (2011), this song has been the band’s most commercially successful song up till date. Spending up to 79 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, this song is the second longest song to stay on the chart after Radioactive by Imagine Dragons.
 

#4 Young and Beautiful – Lana Del Rey

The lead single on the soundtrack to the infamous film 'Great Gatsby', this 2013 song encapsulated the feelings and emotions of Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan perfectly on screen.
 

#5 Pumped Up Kicks – Foster the People

Although one from 10 years ago, this legendary hit was the group’s debut hit in 2010. It was a breakthrough song, became one of the most popular songs of 2011 and has since received 840,775,186 streams on Spotify.
 

#6 My Number – Foals

Released in 2012 with the music video being premiered a year after, this song is from the band’s third studio album called ‘Holy Fire’ and has been their most famous song to date.
 

#7 Are You Bored Yet? – Wallows ft. Clairo

The group’s first single from their 2019 debut album, this song was also their first musical collaboration with Clairo.
 

#8 Pretty Girl – Clairo

Originally named Claire Elizabeth Cottrill, Clairo rose up to fame when this lo-fi song was released on YouTube in 2017.
 

#9 Brazil – Declan Mckenna

Released in 2015, this song was known to have been written about the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the outrageous poverty in the country and the corruption surrounding the FIFA officials.
 

#10 Can I Call You Tonight? – Dayglow

Getting his music to hit off at such an early age (20), believe it or not, the Can I Call You Tonight singer actually begin producing his own music when he was only 10 years old!
 

#11 Two High – Moon Taxi

A song about hope and acceptance, this 2018 indie alternative hit came about, when a member of the band had his phone auto-correct too high to two high, which evoked images of a peace sign.
 

#12 Let’s Dance to Joy Division – The Wombats

Known as one of the band’s signature songs, this song came out in 2007. The song, albeit older than most, has been around for quite some time and even won an NME award for Best Dancefloor Filler in 2008.
 

#13 A-Punk – Vampire Weekend

Though this 2007 song never reached the Billboard Hot 100, it got awarded the band’s first gold single by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) in 2013.
